This is how our Kinetic Chess Set started in 2019, as solid walnut and stainless steel speed run present for my nephew Jeremy. It was fragile and finicky but Jeremy was a sympathetic customer. With joints pressed in end grain it was highly reliant on careful training and use, so we spent the next two years developing the aluminum chassis design that we use today. The pieces are finally falling into place for the Kinetic Chess Set. After trying a huge variety of off the shelf chess pieces, we decided it was best to get custom-machined wooden Staunton-style pieces to properly navigate the packaging constraints of our mechanical chess board.
